Office to olympics: Phoebe’s olympic journey

Our colleague Phoebe Learmont recently represented Australia in the Group Rhythmic Gymnastics competition at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games—a remarkable achievement, especially considering it was only the second time in history that an Australian rhythmic gymnastics group qualified for the Olympics. 


In an exclusive interview, Phoebe shared insights into her life as both an assistant at Forvis Mazars and an Olympian, providing a glimpse into the dedication, challenges, and triumphs that have defined her journey. 


Personal and Professional Background

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Phoebe, and I’m an assistant at Forvis Mazars. I also had the incredible honor of representing Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in rhythmic gymnastics. 

2. What’s your role at Forvis Mazars, and how long have you been with the company? 

Initially, I helped with archiving files and facilitating the transition to a paperless system. Over time, I took on more responsibilities, becoming an assistant where I supported various data cleanup and system transfer projects.

3. How did you get involved in rhythmic gymnastics, and what has your journey been like leading up to the Olympics?

I started artistic gymnastics at the age of five with my cousin, and a year later, I took up rhythmic gymnastics as well. Eventually, I had to choose between the two, and I picked rhythmic gymnastics because I was captivated by the sport. That decision marked the beginning of a 13-year journey that led me to the Olympics.

Preparation and Training 

1. What has your training regimen been like in preparation for the Olympics? 

Our preparation involved overseas trips to gain experience in international competitions and training environments. In Australia, we typically train four to five hours on weekdays and five hours on Saturdays. 

2. What are the main challenges?

Balancing my social life with the demands of training has been tough. Staying mentally positive and motivated, avoiding injuries, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance are ongoing challenges. But with time, I’ve adjusted to the routine and found ways to manage it all. 

3. How do you balance your training and work responsibilities? 

I’m very organized—I set alarms with labels and use reminders to keep myself on track throughout the day. 

4. Have there been any challenges in managing both professional and athletic commitments, and how have you overcome them?

When I was younger, missing out on school parties and social events made me feel left out. But I knew deep down that my sacrifices would be worth it in the end.

Olympic Experience 


1. How does it feel to be representing Australia at the Olympics? 

It’s truly a dream come true, especially experiencing it with my teammates. Being part of only the second rhythmic gymnastics group from Australia to compete at the Olympics is an honor, and we’re determined to make our country proud. 

2. What are your goals and expectations for the Olympic Games?

Our goal is to perform clean routines, both for ourselves and for our coaches. Our ultimate aim is to qualify for the finals, whether with one routine or both. 

3. What are you most looking forward to experiencing in Paris outside of the competition? 

Although we’re mostly in a bubble during the Olympics, I’m really excited about attending the opening and closing ceremonies.

Support and Team

1. How has the support from your colleagues helped you in your athletic journey? 

The support from my colleagues has been incredible. They’re always checking in on me, asking about my training, and offering encouragement. I’m particularly grateful to John and the partners at Forvis Mazars, who have been my biggest supporters over the years. 

2. And your family and friends? 

My family and friends are over the moon about my Olympic journey. My biggest thanks go to my mum, who has been my rock. She started as a judge to support our club and eventually became like my coach, dedicating countless hours to helping me improve. I couldn’t have done it without her.

Personal Insights:

1. What motivates you to continue competing at such a high level? 

Competing at this level isn’t easy—there are always doubts and tough days. But I keep reminding myself of my dream of competing at the Paris Olympics, and that keeps me going. 

2. Would you say this is one of the biggest dreams in your life? 

Absolutely. This sport has been my focus for as long as I can remember, and competing at the Olympics is definitely my biggest dream. 

3. How do you stay focused and maintain a positive mindset during intense training and competition? 

Our team works with a sports psychologist once a week, which has been incredibly helpful. We’ve learned to support each other, communicate well, and stay focused by creating a mental bubble during competitions, shutting out distractions and focusing solely on our team and coaches.

Looking Ahead 

1. What advice would you give to anyone looking up to you? 

Never let anyone tell you that your dream is unreachable. If you put in the dedication, you’ll achieve it. Our group’s motto is “always fight till the end,” because it’s never too late to achieve your goals if you set your mind to it. 

2. And to aspiring athletes who are also pursuing professional careers? 

Stay focused on one thing at a time. When you’re working, focus on your job; when you’re training, focus on your sport. If you start thinking about other things, you won’t be able to perform at your best. 

3. How are you feeling ahead of the Olympics, starting in a few days?

I’m definitely feeling the nerves, but I’m so grateful to my coaches for getting us to this point. I couldn’t have done it without them, and I’m ready to give it my all.
