Tell us about yourself.
My name is José Luis Avedillo, and I have been with Mazars for seven years. Growing up, I had to take responsibility at an early age to help my mother, as my father had health issues that made him unable to work. This motivated me to strongly focus on my studies so that I could obtain scholarships and begin training and working in places that would set me up for the future. I studied business administration and management at the University of Valladolid, and I have a postgraduate degree in auditing and public sector auditing.
Beyond my career, I love music, sports and motorbikes, so whenever I can, I enjoy exploring different routes and amateur races on circuits. I also play the violin and am currently studying physical activity and sport sciences.
Wow! What an impressive journey. Can you tell us more about your work?
To talk about my work, we would have to talk about the word ‘management’. I think that from the first moment in the morning until the end of the working day, I am managing. From calls, emails, and tasks for the team, to invoicing and customer service, there’s always something to manage. I really enjoy my role as a manager and interacting with my team is one of the most enriching aspects of my career.
As an audit manager, how do you see audit?
For me, audit is all about trust. For better or for worse, we live in a society where we depend on each other: if the farmer doesn't look after his animals, the supermarket won't have anything to sell, and people won’t be able to feed themselves. Society depends on trust and auditing is one of the ways that helps to shield and safeguard this trust.
What do you value most in your career?
What I value most in a firm is its ability to connect and empathise with each individual that is part of the organisation. At Mazars, it’s a place where I can express my ideas and ways of thinking with ease. It’s a community that I am happy to be part of, and I enjoy organising events with my colleagues beyond the scope of work. With fellow Mazarians, we share hobbies such as paddle tennis, and regularly compete against each other, which has helped to create bonds that really enrich the work environment.
What have you learnt at Mazars?
I've been in Mazars since I was 23, so looking back as a 30-year-old, I can say that I’ve learnt a lot throughout my experience. It’s often in moments of weakness that can bring out the best version of yourself and help you to get out of your comfort zone and grow. While at times this can be uncomfortable and annoying, it’s necessary and it’s OK.
Over the years, I have learnt to trust and respect my superiors and my team. I know that regardless of what happens, when we work together, we can solve any problem. Moreover, it’s important to recognise that any contribution, however big or small it is, is important and should be listened to. Looking ahead, but I am confident that we can face any challenges that arise and grow together as a team.
